Why Are Floodlights Essential for Airports?

Airports are vast, bustling hubs of activity, requiring reliable lighting to maintain safety, efficiency, and seamless operations.

Types of Airport Floodlights:

Airport floodlighting systems vary based on their purpose, location, and intensity. Here are the main types of floodlights commonly used:

· High-Mast Floodlights

High-mast floodlights are mounted on tall poles, providing illumination over a wide area of the airport. They size typically 20 to 50 meters tall and are equipped with multiple high-intensity lamps. This system is suitable to cover large spaces, such as aprons and parking bays.

· LED Floodlights

LED floodlights are the modern standard for airport lighting due to their efficiency and durability. This technology consumes significantly less energy than traditional halogen or metal halide lamps. Furthermore, it may last up to 50,000 hours, reducing maintenance costs.

· Metal Halide Floodlights

Metal halide lamps are traditional floodlighting systems still used in some airports. This system has become less popular due to the appearence of LED technology that offers larger lifespan and low consumption.

Applications of Airport Floodlighting

Floodlights are used in various airport areas, each with its unique lighting requirements.

  • Apron Lighting: Aprons are the busiest zones in an airport, where aircraft is parked for loading and refueling. Floodlights ensure safety and during boarding and cargo operations. Furthermore, it provides visibility for ground staff to maneuver vehicles and equipment.
  • Airport Perimeter Lighting: Perimeter floodlighting enhances security and prevents unauthorized access. These lights normally are placed covering fences, gates, and perimeter and access roads.

Regulatory Standards for Approach Lighting

Applicable Standard requirements for Apron Floodlighting are defined in EASA CS ADR-DSN.M.750 and 5.3.24 of the ICAO Annex 14 Vol. I, defining the uniformity requirements in illumination, minimum and maximum intensity levels to avoid glare as well as the location within the movement area to ensure complete coverage of operational areas.
