AES Airport Solutions delivers first installation of new solar airfield lighting range to Dublin Airport
Airport Equipment Solutions-AES has successfully completed its first deployment of the new AES-AL-UA-R Solar LED Unserviceable Area Lights at Dublin Airport, marking a significant milestone in sustainable airport lighting technology across Europe.

Project Overview: Dublin Airport Runway 16-34
The project involved the supply and installation of 20 units of AES-AL-UA-R solar unserviceable area lights to mark the closure of Runway 16-34 at Dublin Airport, Ireland’s busiest aviation hub. The lights work in conjunction with barrier systems to clearly delineate the out-of-service area, ensuring maximum safety for aircraft operations during runway maintenance periods.
This installation represents the first delivery from AES’s innovative solar lighting range, which has been specifically designed to cover all airfield lighting applications while meeting the most stringent international aviation standards.

Why Solar LED Airfield Lights?
The AES-AL-UA-R combines cutting-edge solar technology with ICAO compliance, offering airports a sustainable, cost-effective solution for temporary and permanent airfield marking applications. Key advantages include:
Zero Operating Costs
With integrated 12V/2.5W solar panels and a high-capacity 12V/12AH lithium battery, these lights operate completely off-grid, eliminating electricity costs and complex cable installations.
Extended Autonomy
The advanced battery system provides extended operating time, even during Ireland’s challenging weather conditions with limited sunlight. An optional AC-DC charging function ensures continuous operation during prolonged cloudy periods.
ICAO and FAA Compliance
Fully certified to international standards:
- ICAO Annex 14, Volume I (Section 7.4.4)
- ICAO Doc 9152, Part 4
- FAA AC 150/5345-43
Exceptional Durability
- Minimum 100,000-hour LED lifespan
- IP65 protection rating for harsh weather resistance
- Light aluminum alloy construction with superior heat dissipation
- Anti-vibration design for airport environments
Technical Excellence
The AES-AL-UA-R features several innovations that set it apart from conventional airfield lighting:
Smart Power Management: Built-in power indicator LEDs allow maintenance teams to monitor battery status in real-time, preventing unexpected failures.
Flexible Operation: Standard switch button and 3-level dimming function enable operators to adjust light intensity based on visibility conditions and operational requirements.
Wireless Control Option: Units can be controlled remotely over distances of 3-5 kilometers, allowing centralized management of multiple light installations.
Low Power Consumption: At ≤2W consumption, the red LED system delivers high-intensity illumination (10-15 cd) while maximizing battery life.
Quick Deployment: Maintenance-free design with optional coupling plate base ensures fast installation and relocation when needed.
Applications Beyond Unserviceable Areas
While this Dublin Airport project focused on runway closure marking, the AES-AL-UA-R serves dual purposes as both an:
- Unserviceable area light (ICAO Annex 14, Vol. I, Section 7.4.4)
- Low-intensity Type A obstacle light (Table 6-1 classification)
This versatility makes it ideal for various airport applications including:
- Temporary runway and taxiway closures
- Construction zone marking
- Obstacle identification
- Apron area demarcation
- Heliport lighting
Sustainable Aviation Infrastructure
This installation at Dublin Airport demonstrates the aviation industry’s commitment to sustainable operations. Solar LED technology offers airports:
✓ Reduced carbon footprint through elimination of grid electricity ✓ Lower lifecycle costs with minimal maintenance requirements ✓ Rapid deployment without trenching or electrical infrastructure ✓ Operational flexibility for temporary or permanent installations ✓ Energy independence crucial for remote locations
Complete Solar Airfield Lighting Range
The Dublin Airport project marks the beginning of AES’s comprehensive solar lighting program. Our new range covers all airfield lighting applications, providing airports across Europe with certified, sustainable alternatives to traditional powered systems.
AES Airport Solutions continues to lead the distribution of innovative airport lighting equipment throughout Europe, helping aviation facilities modernize their infrastructure while meeting environmental sustainability goals.
